Part Three: Patio Cover Construction

The previously wide open backyard now has several square feet of shade provided by this new patio cover. It is 10-15 degrees cooler in the shade than in direct sunlight. A patio cover also provides the option of installing overhead misters. Rain or shine, a patio cover is an excellent addition to any backyard space.

Customize your Patio Cover Installation

There are other options for patio cover construction from variations on columns, lighting fixtures, and tongue in groove construction style. We can wrap your posts with a decorative pilaster. This will add interest to the columns of your new patio cover. They also make a great landing area to place potted plants. There are many options. We could add a simple stucco finish, or we could attach just about any stone from slate to stacked stone.

TRU Landscape Services is also a full service landscape lighting technician. We install high grade low voltage LED lighting systems. The small lights pictured here are LED and save a lot of power while still sufficiently lighting the outdoor space. Other options include can lighting. A can light is built flush to the ceiling of a patio cover and is a 120 volt light. They are a little bit brighter, give a different look, and give you the option of hooking up a dimmer switch to your system so you can set mood lighting. Another LED lighting options include up lighting to shed light on your plants, pool, or home at night time.

Come take a journey with us through the process of building this Laguna Hills landscape. The job includes low voltage lighting, a fire pit, an outdoor patio area, and custom concrete driveways and walkways.

Laguna Hills Landscapers

The story begins when we were called out for a free estimate to Laguna Hills. If you’re not familiar with the Orange County area, Laguna Hills is a small town surrounded by Laguna Beach, Laguna Niguel and Aliso Viejo. Landscaping in the area tends to create spaces for outdoor living because of the warm and hospitable climate. The customer had a clear idea of what they wanted from their landscapers and we knew this was the right job for us.

After the initial meeting, the customer mentioned that three other landscape companies were also giving estimates. Shortly after we emailed the thorough estimate, the customer called us back to hire us saying they chose us because our estimate was the most detailed out of the four they received. We like to be transparent and detailed in our estimates so you know exactly what to expect.

Laguna Hills Landscape Concrete

After demolition, grading, and laying the underground drain pipes, we started the forms for the landscape concrete. As you can see from the picture, there was a lot of custom concrete work and flagstone involved in the overall design. This design was made up of many smaller squares of concrete. A project like this requires a lot of setup to guarantee a quality product. We worked from design drawings and consulted the customer throughout the process.

Flagstone Walkway

Note the flagstone stairway up to the front doors. Each step is bordered with landscape timber with a flagstone landing and a concrete base to provide its strong foundation. Because flagstone is a natural stone, each pieces strength will vary from strong to more brittle. Flagstone installed in a small layer of concrete or over sand may have individual stones come loose after a relatively short period of use. To avoid this, we always install at least 3 ½ inches of concrete as a foundation so that the flagstone will remain in place for several years. It’s best to start with a good foundation. And all that’s just the front yard!

Backyard Outdoor Living

This Orange County patio area was constructed in the same style as the front yard with the addition of a concrete fire pit and a bench. The space is also surrounded by low voltage landscape lighting to extend the area’s use after the sun sets. Imagine eating in this outdoor dining area on a beautiful Orange County day. Our customer had a flat wood patio cover that was in need of a rebuild. Our customer wanted to rebuild the patio cover in the same design. We had different ideas, so we set up a meeting at one of our recent patio cover installs. After meeting us and seeing the patio cover we wanted to build for them, they changed their mind. The new design we recommended would give them a higher patio cover. This provides a more open space. Plus we used a Tongue and groove wood for the roof. This wood provides a great ceiling to apply a wood stain to. Whenever it’s in the budget we love to use this wood. This wood really ties a patio cover together. Orange County Landscape

TRU Landscape Services just completed a landscape project in Aliso Viejo. Aliso Viejo is a city in Orange County, California. This city is surrounded by the city of Laguna Beach and the city of Laguna Niguel.
TRU Landscape Services works in all of the cities of Orange County, California. This project involved many different aspects of landscaping. We installed a free standing arbor (patio cover). We installed new concrete for the arbor and for the sitting area around the arbor. After being awarded the project, we had to summit our plans to the City for approval. Getting approval took about a week, then we began the project.

Orange County Patio Cover

To begin this project we had to haul out roughly 15 yards of dirt. We had to dig the footings for the patio cover. At the same time, we started leveling out the dirt for the new sitting area, which would be built out of concrete. This arbor had some serious footings. Every post had a 3 foot wide and 3 foot deep footing. First we had to remove all of the dirt and then install the rebar. Plus the whole arbor had a 2 foot wide footing. After installing the rebar and getting the inspection from the city, we poured the concrete. This arbor which is on the small side, has over 20 yards of concrete installed in the footings. This arbor is not going anywhere soon.

Orange County Concrete

TRU Landscape Services takes pride in installing the highest quality concrete in Orange County. While one of our crews was building the arbor, another crew was forming the concrete to be installed. This was a nice size concrete area. We set up all of our forms so that all of our concrete would drain to the area drains. After compacting the soil and installing the rebar we installed the concrete. We installed the concrete the next day and every thing went as planned. We were very happy with the way the concrete turned out! Our crews did a great job!

Now that we had finished the first 2 major parts of this project it was time to install the LED Landscape Lighting. For this task we installed Vista Spot Light and Vista Path Lights. There are several low voltage light companies in Orange County to choose from. So why do we use Vista LED Lights? The first reason was, they were the highest quality light company that we felt comfortable enough to put our reputation on. Plus, they are a local company that makes there products in the USA. We have used there lights for over 15 years!! Plus as an extra bonus they have a 10 year warranty on their LED lights. The sales staff provides great customer service. TRU Landscape Services spends many hours on training our crews on proper lighting techniques.
